It did not end for people who don't. The residential credit closed on 31 December 2025. The commercial one is still standing, and it follows whoever owns the system. That single difference is why a $0-down plan still carries a 30% benefit this year, and a cash purchase gives you nothing back.

What actually changed on 1 January 2026.

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act, signed 4 July 2025, closed the residential solar credit outright. No phase-down, no transition. Most people are still working from the old numbers. Both routes are below.

Section 25D, the residential clean energy credit everyone planned around, ended on 31 December 2025. Buy a system with cash or a loan today and you own it outright, with no federal credit attached to it.

That is not a sales position. It is the law as it stands, and it is why a quote written in 2024 does not describe 2026.

The $0 Down Energy Plan

The credit survives, for the owner.

Section 48E, the commercial credit, is still standing, and nothing in it stops a qualifying system from sitting on a residential roof. It follows whoever owns the equipment.

On the energy plan, in their own words, “our financing partner owns the system — not you.” The partner claims the commercial credit and passes the benefit through as a lower monthly rate. You buy the energy the system produces, not the hardware.

Said plainly: on this route you do not own the system and you do not claim the credit. That is the trade, and it is the whole reason the benefit still exists. Only select homeowners qualify for $0 down.

Storm season

In Houston the bill is only half the argument.

The other half is the grid. Their own framing is blunt about it: stop depending on the grid, take back your power. Panels alone go quiet the moment the utility drops. A battery is what keeps the house running when the street does not.

Battery work is in-house here rather than subcontracted, across Tesla Powerwall, Generac, Franklin, LG Chem and Enphase. That is a licensing question as much as a product one.

The licence

Most people knocking on Houston doors are salespeople.

Texas Direct Solar holds Texas Electrical Contractor Licence #34757 and does the panel and meter work in-house, which most solar-only outfits and most roofers legally cannot. It is the difference between a crew that installs panels and a crew that can move your service.
